Hattingley Valley was established by ex-solicitor Simon Robinson, who discovered that the soils...

on his farmland were ideal for grape growing and realised his dream by planting his first vines in 2008. Along with the classic varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, he added a nursery with another 3000 vines of different grape varieties and rootstocks in order to determine the best matches of grape variety for the site. The newly built winery is eco-friendly, being the first in the UK to use solar power and an innovative way of dealing with the winery's effluent. The winery's waste water flows downhill to where a Bio-Bubble aerobic digester is buried. It cleanses the waste water through the use of living bacteria and the resultant water is clean and potable. This forward thinking and experimental approach makes Hattingley Valley an exciting new English producer to watch.

Vineyards

Established in 2008, Hattingley Valley planted its first 11 hectare south-facing site with Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Situated on clay loam over chalk bedrock with extensive canopy management throughout the season, it provides excellent growing conditions to produce high quality, hand picked fruit.

Vintage Information

Following England's disappointing 2012 vintage, Hattingley Valley were very pleased with 2013. Although it was unseasonably cold in April and May, which delayed budburst by two weeks, there was very hot weather throughout July. The successful flowering enabled a healthy fruit set which led to good yields across all of their sites. Harvest started on 2nd October and ended on 5th November. The grapes achieved good sugar levels with sufficient acidity for premium sparkling wine.

Vinification

After the grapes were harvested and sorted, 25% of the total blend was barrel fermented in three and four year old white Burgundy and Bordeaux barrels, giving the wine a lovely texture and richness. The wine then spent eight months on its fermentation lees, with no stirring or addition of sulphur dioxide and occasional topping up. Final blending was done and the wine then spent 13 months ageing on its lees.

Tasting Notes

The 2013 has a fine bubble and pale, delicate gold colour. The well-developed nose shows a hint of toasty brioche and some subtle oak character. Crisp acidity on the palate is elegantly balanced with medium body and a touch of sweetness.
